City of Arts and Sciences Valencia: What Is Free and What Is Worth Going Inside

Updated October 8, 2026 · 5 min read

You do not need a ticket to understand why the City of Arts and Sciences became Valencia’s modern landmark. The long pools, bridges, gardens and white shells are outdoors. A walk through the complex is free and can easily occupy an hour, particularly near sunset.

What you can see without paying

Start at the Palau de les Arts and walk east through L’Umbracle, past the Hemisfèric and Museu de les Ciències towards the Oceanogràfic. This gives you the main architectural views and puts the buildings in context. L’Umbracle is a raised garden and viewpoint; the Agora, now CaixaForum València, has its own exhibition programme.

The exteriors are the right choice when you have little time, mainly want photographs, or are crossing the Turia Gardens by bicycle. A ticket does not unlock a hidden architectural route: it buys the activity inside a particular building.

What is worth entering

The Oceanogràfic is the strongest stand-alone attraction and needs three to four hours by most visitor guides. It suits families and anyone primarily interested in marine life. Read our Oceanogràfic ticket guide before adding other venues.

The Museu de les Ciències works through interactive exhibits. It is best for visitors who want to touch, test and read, not for someone expecting a collection of Valencian art. The Oceanogràfic and Science Museum ticket starts at €38.90.

The Hemisfèric is a domed cinema with timed sessions. Its value depends on the current film and available language, so check both before choosing the three-venue combination, from €45.55.

The honest one-day answer

The Oceanogràfic states that combined tickets can be used on consecutive days, one site per day. Spreading the Oceanogràfic and the museum with Hemisfèric over two days is more realistic than trying to complete all three at once. With one day, choose one major interior and keep time for the outdoor walk. With only an evening, spend nothing and enjoy the architecture as the light changes.
