Montanejos from Valencia: Hot Springs, Hiking or Rafting?
Updated October 8, 2026 · 6 min read
Montanejos is sold as a hot-springs escape from Valencia, but that phrase creates the wrong expectation. Fuente de los Baños is a natural bathing stretch of the River Mijares, not a steaming spa pool. The spring water remains around 25°C throughout the year: pleasant in summer, noticeably cool when the air is cold.
What the main day trip includes
The Montanejos thermal pools, hiking and adventure day trip starts at €33 and lasts about 8.5 hours. It is the most-reviewed nature excursion in the current Valencia selection. The option name can include rafting, kayaking or hiking, but those are not interchangeable promises. Read the option for your date and check what equipment, transport and activity are actually included.
The strongest reason to book an organised trip is transport. Montanejos lies inland in Castellón province, and a day tour removes the need to coordinate a car, parking and seasonal access at Fuente de los Baños. Independent travellers who want to combine several inland stops can compare car hire in Valencia, then verify parking and access for their date. The weakness is the fixed tour timetable: the group decides how long you have at the river and whether a walk or adventure activity takes priority.
Bathing, hiking or adventure
Choose the bathing-focused version if the gorge and river are the point. Depth changes along the stretch, so water confidence is relevant; do not treat the entire river as a shallow pool. Access is regulated on selected busy dates, so independent visitors should check the official calendar and book when required.
A hiking combination gives the landscape more context and makes sense outside peak summer heat. Footwear matters: a city trainer suitable for the coach is not automatically suitable for a rocky path. Confirm the route and difficulty with the operator, because “hiking” can cover very different distances.
Rafting or kayaking changes the day from sightseeing to an active excursion. Choose it because you want that activity, not because it appears in a long title. Verify minimum age, swimming requirements and the operator’s weather decision on the booking page. These conditions vary, so a universal limit would be misleading.
What to take and when to reconsider
Bring swimwear, a towel, footwear that can get wet and a dry layer for the return. The water temperature does not make the river warm in the way a heated spa is warm. In cooler months, the moment after leaving the water can be the least comfortable part.
Skip the longest adventure version if your main aim is an unhurried swim, or if anyone in the group dislikes deep natural water. Choose a simpler nature excursion when mixed fitness levels make a full activity day difficult. Compare nature and adventure tours from Valencia and judge the exact option, not the broad headline.
